Homeschooling: Answering Your Questions (Part Two)

/ Comments Off on Homeschooling: Answering Your Questions (Part Two)

Even though homeschooling is a widely accepted educational alternative, many people still have lots of questions — especially those considering taking the leap. In an earlier post about homeschooling, I answered some frequently asked questions. This post is part two of my answers to questions I often receive about homeschooling. How rapidly is home education growing? Almost 2 million students were homeschooled in the United States during 2002-2003.* The growth rate is 7% to 15% per year, according to Dr. Brian Ray, president of the National Home Education Research Institute (Worldwide Guide to Homeschooling). How my Family Came to Homeschool I mentioned this in part 1 of this series, but I’ll briefly…

Faith, Hope, and Love: A Book Review of Ghost Boy by Martin Pistorius

By Sally Matheny All Photos are courtesy of Martin Pistorius Martin Pistorius’ has found a way to communicate his journey of becoming a mute, quadriplegic teen to a strong man with a message to share. Faith, hope and love—my review of Ghost Boy by Martin Pistorius. A Normal Childhood At the age of twelve, Martin Pistorius slowly slipped from perfect health into an unknown illness. His body weakened and his memories faded. After his parents exhausted all medical avenues for an answer, they painfully watched their son become a mute, quadriplegic. For four years, Martin was in a waking coma state in an unresponsive shell, unseeing and unknowing of his…

Summer Fun for Family: Pickin’ and Grinnin’ at Earl Scruggs Center

/ Comments Off on Summer Fun for Family: Pickin’ and Grinnin’ at Earl Scruggs Center

If you've ever watched the television series, The Beverly Hillbillies, you may remember musicians Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt. Occasionally, they sauntered through the Clampetts’ mansion door pickin’ and grinnin’. If you missed their appearances, you didn’t miss out on their music. Scruggs and Flat performed the theme song for the show. You can share the history of the toe-tapping, bluegrass music with your children by visiting a wonderful museum in western North Carolina. The Earl Scruggs Center, which opened in January 2014, is located on Lafayette Street in Shelby, North Carolina.

by Sally Matheny New York Times bestselling author, Lee Strobel, along with Focus on the Family’s Clubhouse editor, Jesse Florea have pulled together eight, true stories that exemplify grace. Published by Zonderkidz, the target age stated for the book is for those ages eight to twelve, but I think the book tends to lean towards the older youth. I’d definitely not limit it to twelve-year-olds. High school students will find the stories pack quite a punch. Be sure to read at the end how you might win this book. Not all of the stories are about kids. Some cover the experiences of college students and older adults. But they all…
