Give a Bible Away Day

“Give a Bible Away Day” takes place one day prior to “Bring Your Bible to School Day.”

Bring Your Bible to School Day is a great way for children to exercise their faith. Christians are thankful someone shared the love of Jesus Christ with them. But for many, it requires courage for them to step outside of the church and verbally share the love of Christ with others. Parents who encourage their children to consider participating in “Bring Your Bible to School Day” are providing opportunities for them to grow strong and courageous.

For many Christian homeschool families, every day is “Bring Your Bible to School Day.” Several years ago, I wanted the homeschool students to do something just as brave as their public school friends, so I issued a challenge.

Designating the day before “Bring Your Bible to School Day,” as “Give a Bible Away Day,” I encouraged homeschool students to go out into their communities and give away Bibles or Bible-based literature, such as Christian books and magazines, or Sunday School literature.

If You’d Like to Participate

If you’d like to participate, I have a few helpful suggestions.

Don’t force or manipulate children into participating. But set the example. Show them how to speak to others with kindness and respect. Model for them how to approach someone, introduce yourself, tell about “Bring Your Bible to School Day” and how you’re participating in “Give a Bible Away Day.” ASK the person if they would like to have a free copy of the Bible/Christian literature. If they say no, then respect that. Thank them for allowing you to take a few minutes of their time and to have a great day.

It’s okay to tell our children if we are nervous about speaking to strangers. That allows the children to see how we work through our fears in order to share the love of Jesus. I tell my kids that when I get nervous before speaking, I remind myself my heart-message is greater than my fears. Also, I pray.

Let’s pray with our kids before we go out in our communities.

Thank you, God, for your Holy Word. What a wonderful gift You have given us! Search our hearts for bad attitudes and misplaced motivation. Forgive us and help us. May our thoughts and actions please You. Show us who to give the Bibles to, and what to say. Help us work through our fears. Enable us to adequately spread Truth and Light in this dark world. Thank You for allowing us to join You wherever You’re working. Amen.

Gather the Bibles and Christian literature you plan to give away. These can be new or gently used. The important thing is that the literature is Biblical-based. We have also found that some people who turn down a Bible, eagerly accept Christian magazines–especially ones they can give their kids. Examples of these are Clubhouse, Clubhouse Jr., Brio, and Keys for Kids.

One time, a woman at a laundry facility told me she didn’t care for a Bible but she would take a Christian magazine for her child. A few minutes later, I noticed her poring over the magazine herself while waiting for her clothes to dry. That magazine was full of God’s love, truth, and encouragement!

Do your best and give God the rest. He can take our fumbles and jumbles and create a miracle. Don’t let pride seep in. Instead, rejoice about the power of God.

Jesus commanded us to go and tell the Good News. We can help the next generation practice this by encouraging them when they are young. Giving a Bible to someone is a good start.
