God’s Gentle Care: Book Review and Giveaway

What could be more soothing to a child than farm animals and bedtime blessings? The third book in the Bedtime Blessings series, God’s Gentle Blessings, offers more than your average bedtime story.

The Author

Glenys Nellist was born and raised in a little village in northern England. Now, she lives in Michigan with her husband, David. Glenys is the author of multiple award-winning children’s books, including the five popular series: Love Letters from God, Snuggle Time, ‘Twas, Bedtime Blessings, and Little Mole. I’ve reviewed another one of her Bedtime Blessings books before, God’s Perfect Peace.

Glenys’ writing reflects a deep passion for helping children discover joy and hope in the world. She shares this note:

“Dear Friend, there is power in speaking a simple bedtime blessing over our children. When we say a blessing over our little ones using words of scripture, we create a truly sacred moment when our words, like seeds, take root in our children’s minds and hearts. Tracing a simple symbol on their forehead or palm as you speak makes the experience tactile as well as auditory. Imagine the power of your child falling asleep every single night, secure in the knowledge that they are blessed by God and that they, themselves, are a blessing.”

About God’s Gentle Care

The book opens with a page for you to personalize.

I love the sentiment: This gift is for __________ who is deeply loved by ___________.

After the presentation page, the next page features the book’s theme Bible verse: [God] cares for you, 1 Peter 5:7.

Illustrator Natalie Merheb depicts cute farm animals with their babies throughout the book.

Cats, goats, chickens, sheep, donkeys, pigs, and more animals are illustrated in soft, warm colors. The night scenes are soothing.

Each illustration is accompanied by excellent rhyming text that reminds children of God’s gentle care.

One Example from God’s Gentle Care

As the sun sets behind a red barn, a mama duck floats in the pond with her wings spread over her ducklings. The text reads:

Now close your eyes and know that God

Is smiling as you rest.

You’re loved, and held, and cared for

By the One who knows you best.

The Extra Blessings

On the last page, a special note to the reader explains the power of speaking blessings over their children. Four blessings based on scriptures (1 Peter 5:7, Isaiah 46:4, and Psalm 139:10) are provided. A blank space is provided for readers to fill in the child’s name as they speak the blessing over them.

Example:

___________, may you know how much God cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7)

Another blessing children may receive is through the free resources section of the author’s website. For this book, you’ll find bookmarks, pencil and cutting skill activities, coloring pages, blessing cards, and more.

Recommendation and Giveaway

I recommend this sweet bedtime blessing book for ages 2 -5. I love that it reminds little ones of God’s loving care for them right before they drift off to sleep.

The blessings to speak over children are grounded in Biblical truth. I believe praying for your child, blessing them with God’s Word, and reading this heartwarming book to them is a perfect way to end the day.

We will give away a copy of this book on November 6, 2026, using our regular Winner Selection Process.
