College Student: Be a Game-Changer & Beat the Need for “Adulting”

/ Comments Off on College Student: Be a Game-Changer & Beat the Need for “Adulting”

by Sally Matheny When my children were preschoolers, they “beat” me in every game. I made sure they buzzed in answers before me, scored the most points, and reached the finish line first. The same took place in other areas. Batches of backward letters were praised, rather, than reshaped. Misspoken words adored instead of corrected. Scored baskets enticed wild cheers at their first basketball games. We did not dare mention the refs overlooking some serious walking infractions. Why We Enabled Our Children to “Win” Why? Because we did not want our children to be upset if they failed to win. Because we, like many others, wanted our children to feel…

  • Book Review and Giveaway of HOPE GIRL by Wendy Dunham

by Sally Matheny Do you remember what it was like to be twelve years old? It’s not the easiest stage in life. Often times, tweens long for their lives to be different, be better. The main character of Hope Girl, River Starling, zeroes in on several things she’d like to change.   Missing Someone It’s taken most of her life to find her biological parents, now River’s number one goal is to reunite with them and become a family again. But it’s not going to be easy. Her mother has amnesia and her father is about to marry someone else!   River longs to talk with her best friend, but he’s…

THIS LIFE I LIVE by Rory Feek – Book Review & a Giveaway!

by Sally Matheny   “I wish I was doing something important with my life.” Have you ever said that? Longed for a life, or a love, that was exceptional? God has the power to press the extraordinary out of the ordinary. Rory Feek can attest to that. You’ll have to forgive me. I’m probably in the 1% of folks who had not heard of Joey and Rory Feek until I saw a clip on Facebook a while back promoting their movie, To Joey with Love. But that one small clip drew me in. I knew I wanted to learn more about this ordinary man, this ordinary woman, and their extraordinary love story.…

  • Book Review of MY NAME IS RIVER by Wendy Dunham & a Giveaway

by Sally Matheny   Today, I’m posting a book review of My Name is River, authored by Wendy Dunham, and we have a special giveaway! If fictional worlds merged, I bet twelve-year-old, River Starling, the main character in My Name is River would be best friends with Opal, the ten-year-old main character in Because of Winn Dixie. Both girls are similar in spunk and curiosity. However, author, Wendy Dunham, presents River with the “class dork” for a friend. Since River is running low on camaraderie, and she’s been assigned a class project with him anyway, River decides to give William a chance. Besides, her Gram always says, “If you judge…

  • The National D-Day Memorial: Clearly a Worthwhile Journey

Our trip to Virginia, in the summer of 2015, began on a sunny note, but quickly immersed under thick clouds and drizzling rain. The dreary weather lounged with us almost every day in the Shenandoah Valley. The morning of our departure, June 5, the dense fog finally rose just enough to scout over the trees. The rain ceased. Wanting to squeeze in one more activity before checking out, we raced to the chairlift located on the property. By the time we reached the summit, the weather changed. A thick, white fog veiled everything from sight. As we descended the mountain, I thought about how thick clouds caused problems on another…
